Reino Helismaa, well-known as a visitor to Lapland, wrote the verses to Vanhan Myllyn Taru: "It has ground joy and sorrow, I guess, many bitter tears have already fallen on its stones. It must have only crushed the disappointment, but rejoiced with the bountiful harvest".
Surely these verses also apply to Äkäsmylly. A mill, a cafe made from an old stamping booth, a wooden shed, a netting booth, a barn and a toilet stand on the bank of the Äkäsjoki, which flows from Äkäsjärvi to Äkäslompolo, as if they had been there since the beginning of time.
From 1977, Äkäsmylly's buildings were harnessed for tourism and street cafe use. I myself was involved in restoration work for a while with my father. In the restored mill building in the picture, barley flour was ground for Riemuliter's Wednesday night mill dances. Lapland baptisms and singing together have also been held there.
At the time of taking the picture, it is January and the silence of midwinter around the mill. The sympathetic rapids moves under the line and dives into the melted water in search of food. Snowy birches surround and cover the patinated building, which reminds of the time when the work had to be done sometimes after the heaviest.
Before taking the picture, I felt the atmosphere that was emanating from the place on my snowshoes. I remember my father's poetic words from the time when he spent the winter at the restoration site: "You can feel the peace of the wilderness, Äkäslinkka just hums quietly. Its old mill grinds again, its stone knocks on the staff".
