Kumputunturi is located further away from the tourist centers on the eastern edge of Kittilä. This wilderness-like fell appears from Ylläs and Levi as lonely as if it is separated from the other fells of Tunturi-Lap.

The picture shows a strong cloud formation like sails above the fell. The picture was taken from the Sotkajärvi beach in Kuivaniemi, Kittilä.

Samuli Paulaharju wrote in Lapland's reminiscences: How "Lovinoita Karkea-raukka, who fished both in his home lake and in Sotkajärvi, a couple of quarters south of Kelontekemi.

The mother had her own assistants who kept a lodge in Kumputunturi. When the old man went fishing in Sotkajärvi, he rowed to the southern end of Kelontekämä, walked three rows of rowan trees from the forest and, standing next to his boat, waved with rowan trees towards Kumputunturi and called the "hill boys" to help: "Everybody bows, every one pulls, every one stops at a spot!" The guy just pointed to where the helpers had to hold on to with his broomsticks. From that, the invisible fell boys grabbed the boat, the guy himself jumped from the stern, and the five fathom boat started to slide along the land, going as far as it would go.
