The crow (Perisoreus infaustus) is a curious and sympathetic bird belonging to the crow family. They are most often found near roadside cafes and sheds, where people feed them.

There, being used to people, it might be very cheeky and grab a sausage from the bread when the hiker starts putting the bread in his mouth. Kuukkeli is easily tamed and gets close to people in other parts of the forest.

I have often noticed a bird gliding in the shadows of fir branches in the autumn forest and heard its faint croaking beep. Kuukkeli gives a mystical impression of itself, because it often buzzes low under branches and short distances at a time, at the same time vocalizing in a mysterious low voice.

Kuukkel is considered a lucky bird; the former lumberjacks and hunters were happy to see the owl, because it predicted a good successful day. It is also called the mistress of the forest. It's a hiker's guy.

The bird in the picture was not a ringed individual, but wild and free. Still, it flew across the bog onto a frosty branch while I was skiing on a frosty day in February. It sat in the tree long enough for me to photograph it.

Then the bird flapped its wings and disappeared into the thicket behind the swamp, as if it had only come to pose.
