The still-standing forest cabins in Lapland tell of the time when daily bread had to be taken from savotas. Metsäkampä was the home of the men who drove, the drivers and the women who worked as cooks in the middle of Lapland's harsh winter.

"Kemiyhtiö is the best of the parties" The sabotaging men in the woods were laughing at the political currents of the time. There is a certain wisdom in the sentence, because the lumber companies gave work, depending on the time with varying valuations, but they gave anyway.

Back in the 1960s, loggers and work in the forest were the main bread importers for Lapland households, and forest cabins were important buildings.

Another livelihood that brought meat on top of bread was reindeer herding. Both livelihoods are still strong, but much changed. Savottakämpi are no longer used in the way they were originally built, and some of the buildings rot and disappear as the forest takes over. Reindeer stand in the early winter snow in the yard of an abandoned cabin as if to say that they have always lived here.
